Is it safe to be adjusted by a chiropractor when you are pregnant?
Is it safe to be adjusted in late term pregnancy?
If you ask the general public or non chiropractic health professionals you will get mixed and uninformed answers.
This is a topic that has been discussed for decades. Let’s take a look at some facts and misconceptions.
Chiropractic care has been repeatedly proven to be safe and effective for infants, toddlers, teens, young adults and the geriatric population.
Chiropractic care is also safe and beneficial for pregnant women in all stages of pregnancy.
Many peer reviewed research articles have shown that women who are adjusted throughout their pregnancy have easier deliveries and pregnancies.
Any woman who has been pregnant can tell you first hand about the stress one feels on the neck, back, hips and knees.
As the baby grows in utero pressure is applied to the pelvic area and low back. Weight shifts occur and women can feel unbalanced and simple tasks can become very difficult.
During the later stage of pregnancy the body starts to increase production of the hormone Relaxin which causes the ligaments of the pelvis and softens and widens the cervix.
This hormone affects the entire body causing ligament laxity and at times women can even develop carpal tunnel syndrome that will self resolve following childbirth.
With all of these changes that happen during pregnancy it is beneficial to receive chiropractic adjustments which can reduce nerve compression that leads to pain, numbness and tingling in the arms and legs.
