Back pain and back health are closely related to proper hydration. Our bodies are made up of 70% water. The discs in our back and neck are fluid filled as well as other joint capsules in the body. Our blood is mostly water. Without water there is no life.
Many people say they drink when they are thirsty. “I will grab a Coke or an energy drink when I am thirsty”. This is not the same as drinking water and staying hydrated. You can live a healthy happy life if you NEVER drink another soda or energy drink. But, without drinking water, the average person will live about three days.
I still think having a treat every now and then is fine. Have a beer, a Coke or whatever else is in the beverage cooler at the store. It should be a treat, not a daily habit.
A lot of people are walking around under-hydrated and they don’t even know it. This can be magnified when colder weather appears. People are more in tune to their thirst levels when it is hot or when they are sweating. In the winter months people are less aware of their thirst.
Cold days can be very dry and very taxing on the human body. Be aware of your water intake on cold days when you are outside and being active.
There are many “calculations” concerning how much water a human needs. It varies and it changes as different research changes. The “1/2 your body weight in ounces” is a common suggestion.
My suggestion? Put down the soda, juice, coffee and pick up a glass of pure water. Enjoy it. Feel how good you feel when you are properly hydrated.
